Many Americans could not wait for 2011 to disappear.  Add me to the list. The loss of loved ones, the horrible economy and the names of  ridiculous politicans and crooks splashed across the front pages of newspapers far and wide were an embarrassment to all who read.

Fortunatley, there were a few good things that happened, but they were like looking for a needle in a haystack sometimes. The leather community certainly was not without it’s trials and tribulations. The loss of leather icons from coast to coast gave us much sadness.

Disappointment reigned within the leather contest world at times. However with each disappointment a Phoenix rose from the ashes and gave us hope and faith once again. Mid Atlantic Leather 2011 did not disappoint.  The judges selection Doug Pamplin to represent the Mid Atlantic region at IML proved to be a wise choice.

Mr. DC Eagle 2012 & Mr. Eagle NY 2012

Not only did he  represent the entire east coast, but came within a few points of becoming International Mr Leather. Meanwhile the IML title went across the pond when Eric Guttierez of France grabbed the golden ring. Anthony Rollar, Mr San Diego Leather 2010 was 2nd runner up.

International Leather Sir and boy contest was held as scheduled. American Leatherman, Leather woman, and Leatherboy pulled itself up by it’s bootstraps and had a new winner for each of their titles last year. The same can be said for The Leatherman of Color event which was held in Augusta, GA. No one was “appointed” for their contest to represent the the Men of Onyx at IML. Peter Hamilton from Atlanta is now LOC 2012.  IMsL judges selected Sara Vibes from New York to carry that title.

Several new gay bars opened and one well established bar in Washington DC changed ownership. A roar of approval errupted with the posting of the new names. Congratulations to Ted Clements, Peter Lloyd and Angus– of the DC Eagle. No time was wasted in bringing back old patrons and many new ones.

The DC Eagle celebrated it’s 40 th anniversary. Anniversary pins, coffee mugs, T shirts, and stunning commerative belt buckles. A new Mr DC Eagle sash made it’s appearance and for the first time in years a cash prize was given to the winner of the Mr. DC Eagle contest. Kevin Jordan won the title of  Mr. DC Eagle 2012 and will compete at IML in May.  Friendly staff both new and old have ensured patrons are welcome.

The holidays seemingly flew by, and the first major leather event of 2012 kicked off January during MLK Jr weekend. MAL, the 2nd largest Leather event in the US was a smashing success. Nine men competed for the coveted title. When all was said and done and the scores were tallied, Matthew Bronson was selected Mr. MAL 2012. The judges were Eric Guttierez, IML 2011, Doug Pamplin, MAL 2011, Anthony Rollar, Mr. San Diego Leather 2010, Sara Vibes, IMsL 2011, Ted Clements, owner of the DC Eagle, Dean Ogren, Producer of ABW, and Jay Harcoat, Mr Hayes Valley Leather 2005, of San Francisco.

It seems several gay married couples are already attempting to break the record set by Kim Kardashian and Kris Humprhies. One former west coast title holder headed towards the divorce court after only 60 days of wedded bliss, another similar separation occured in the Sunshine State. Would’nt one think couples would learn to become friends before racing off to Tiffany’s to have wedding bands inscribed? Yes there have even been several gay couples fighting on national TV on Divorce court and The Peoples Court over tupperware and the dog named spot.

Another distasteful eposode occurred when a recent titleholder was informed he would be receiving a $200  travel fund and a vest donated by a leather shop as a prize. The announcement was made from the stage the night he won. But alas, that did not happen, and the store allegedly donating the vest knew nothing about it. As for the travel fund, that disappeared into thin air… He later was informed that the travel fund monies would be applied to his hotel bill when he arrived at the IML host hotel next May.  The travel fund should have been given to him the night he won the title, as should the alledged certificate for the vest. It should have been his choice what to spend the money on. To add insult to injury the winner had to pay for his own vest patch, as well as a sash which he had no input on the design or  color. What a shabby way to treat your titleholder represenative. For a club that has been in existance for years and at least 4 active chapters, a transferable sash could have been bought and paid for years ago.

For many many years Leather Cocktails held during MAL weekend was one of the shinning lights during the weekend. Leathermen and Women always dressed in “High Cow” for that special event. An open bar, delicious food and  great camaraderie. What a disappointment to witness the debacle this year. Some in attendance looked like they had just crawled out of a dumpster in some alley. dirty clothes, jock straps, chains and crawling around the floor looking like they had just arrived off a boat from some 3rd world county..Leather cocktails has sunk to new lows and what an embarrasment to even have to look.  It was the talk of the evening. I suppose for the idiots who do not know how to dress for a formal affair, a large flyer in bold black lettering will need to be added in the weekend package, or be turned away at the door. It can be said that titleholders both present and past were dressed properly. They were raised properly.

Next year MAL will be held one week earlier  due to the Innaugeration of the 45th President of the United Sates.

Comments are flying over a female title holder who’s room was filled with so much pot smoke that the hotel staff thought they would have to call the fire department. What a disappointing role model.

A word to the wise, titleholders who have no interest in the leather history, and who are competing at IML, should be at least able to name 3 former IML”s other than the one who will be sitting at the judging table during interview. Especially if a former IML represented your state or country. The IMrL website has that information. Very sad when a contestant has to run out after interview and look up that  information.

After 53 contestants paraded across the IML stage in Chicago, May 29, the top 20 finalist were announced.  The finalist were prepared for their final judged categories (speech and ).

When all was said and done and the scores tallied, Executive Producer and Founder of IML Chuck Renslow announced Eric Guttierez, Mr. European Leather  as the new International Mr. Leather 2011. Eric resides in Paris

First runner up was awarded to Doug Pamplin, Mr. Mid Atlantic Leather 2011, and second runner up honors went to Anthony Roller, Mr. San Diego Leather 2010

Jim Deuder, NYC grabbed the International Bootblack title. The crowd seemed rather pleased with the selections. Once again the 33rd annual IML was a success.

One of the biggest successes was the location where IML was held this year. The  Harris Theater, located on Randolph St, just walking distance from the Host Hotel. All the contestants were thrilled with the backstage space and dressing area. Judges seating was exceptional and the audience had an unparralled view, not to mention the great lighting and sound.

Goodbye Congress Theater. Let’s hope the contest will be held there for years to come. The introduction of the  contestants, judges, Tallymasters and other important IML Staff and the Pecs and personality portion was held in the Grand Ballromm of the Chicago Hyatt. The vendor Market was over flowing  with everything imaginable and cash registers were humming a tune all weekend long.

Rumors that had surfaced that the local union would attempt to interupt any of the weekend proceedings, proved to be non existant. The biggest concern for the hotel seemed to be their ability to keep the ATM machines filled. They have promised that will not be an issue next year according to one hotel Manager.

During the weekend parties abounded throughout the hotel. It was heard that nearly 2,000 attended the Onyx party. The San Francisco Party was another huge success. This observer was unabe to make it it everysingle party and still be in the interview room at 8 AM  to work with the contestants each day. Judges (if late) and several were had to deal with judges coordinator, Generalismo Billy Lane) which was nearly a fate worse than death.

All the contestants realize that there will be only one Man selected for the top honor. However that does not mean that some won’t be disappointed at their placement (top 20 or not). However throwing a hissy fit over the outcome, turns a pleasant leather brotherhood gathering into a miserable weekend for all involved.

Oh yes, there were a few of those types around. And as IML judges know there will always be supporters, sponsors, and BF and lovers who will get in your face and want to know why their favorite did not win.. Many times it is because they did poorly in interview.

This year was no different that the past 32 years. Some contestants did their homework and some did not. Some really did not care if they won and hoped they would not.. Some knew little about the city, bar, town and the issues involving their areas.  In some cases little about themselves as well.

Some had excellent mentors and advisors, some did not, and sadly some had none. It is indeed very sad indeed to be competing for the biggest most well known leather title in the world that our forebearers who paved the way for this even to happen for the past 33 years and for Chuck Renslow to ensure that it will continue for decades to come and to have leathermen and women to be recognized  Our leaders of the past, present and future.

To be asked to name three past IML’s (excluding the current one) says a lot  about the lack of knowledge and history of the past when a contestant cannot name one.  IML represents the outstanding men of our communities, who will be the Ambassador and spoksperson and represenative for our tribe and who represents those of us who are unable to speak freely on our own.

To say the titleholder cannot have fun during his title year would be absurd. But to enter a contest for that reason only, defeats the original purpose of the event. Former IML titleholders have set standards and educated new generations of men into the leather world.  Men like David Kloss, Patrick Toner, Scott Tucker, Guy Baldwin, Tony Mills, John Pendal and many others from the US and other countries have done so much to pave the way.

It is sincerely hoped that future contestants think long and hard about the reason they wish to enter a local contest that will propel them to Chicago and IML  Ego’s, physique, sash rash and costuming are just a small part of the overall consideration. Intelligence, compassion, educating, the younger generations  in what it means to be a leatherman and what is a leatherman, is what makes up the whole package\

This year a real crowd pleaser emerged at the IML dance following the contest Sunday night. IML 2008 Gary Iriza was the featured DJ. His Music  rocked the house. Many were surprised at his talents and loved every minute of if..You Go Gary!  For some of the older crowd in attendance at the contest, the entertainment was provided by a group  aptly named American English. They entertained with all the songs from the Beatle era, and the audience was out of their seats singing those favorite Beatle melodies

Emcees David Kloss (IML79) and Queen Cougar kept the show moving in a timly manner and worked very well together.

If you did not have a good time at IML this year, then you had no one to blame but yourself. Indeed there was something there for everyone. Upon returning home from Chicago, the leather community was informed of the sad news of the passing of George Wong in Los Angeles. George served the community with a passion. Leatherman, producer, speaker, club member, workshop facilitator, historian, former IML Judge and IML staff volunteer.

George was the man who after meeting him once, you felt you had known him all your life, California will miss him emensley as well as everyone across the United States. Sympathy goes to his family and all the hundress of friends who loved and adored him.

A celebration of his life in Los Angeles will be announced at a later date.

International Mr Leather is upon us.  Heads, eyes and bodies of leathermen and leatherwomen will be heading to Chicago Memorial Day weekend.  The Granddaddy of leather contests is here. Always a fun weekend for everyone who attends.

Sad to say, over the past few years the contest itself does not hold the attention as it used to in earlier decades.  The younger generation of leathermen seem to be more concerned about the circuit parties, and working  the floors at the host hotel.  When one returns from the contest  and five out of ten people ask you “who won”?, it becomes very clear what and where their priorities were.

Back in the day when the contest was the main reason you attended IML to support your favorite contestant and to lend your support to your hometown city and their representative, it was indeed a contest.  The contestants all wanted to look their very best and the concern of where the closest gym to the host hotel was located.

Those were the days  when competition you were representing the entire leather community not just your local home town bar should you win the title or one of the runner up positions. Boots were polished, leather was spotless and you had something to say that would make the audience sit up and take notice.

Now a day when competing for a title, those aforementioned things seem to not mean much anymore.  It is indeed sad to attend  leather contests and observe contestants  who’s leather consisted of a belt, and maybe a  few pieces of non fitting borrowed leather.

Although the blame cannot be completely placed on the person running for the title. Much of that blame can be pointed directly at the  bar owners, managers, and mentors of some of the establishments.  There are some fine  supportive leather bars and organization that work with their titleholders. Therefore it is very important that the old guard and the new guard work together to educate, train and mentor our younger leather generation,

This will be the 33rd year for IML.  It is equally as important to have well rounded judges who have a vast knowledge of yesterday, today and tomorrow.  Chuck Renslow, Patrick Batt and all the fine men we have as role models.  The late Etiene, Tony DeBlase, Marcus Hernandez and the dozens of others who have gone before us blazing the trail.  All of our leather community must give some thought to what the next 30 years we intend to accomplish.

The IML class of 2011 is quickly forming. The showdown will occur Memorial day weekend. Excitement is building in all the cities and bars across the United States and Europe as their represenatives are selected to compete at International Mr. Leather.

Considering that there will be at least 60 contestants competing for the title, the invited judges will not have an easy task. It is indeed an impressive title to hold for an entire year. I wonder if the men competing for that title, realize they are representing the entire leather community worldwide?  No longer just a local or state titleholder.

Have they given thought to the amount of time, effort and money that will be drained from their wallets  during the entire year?  Have they thought of the amount of separation that they will incur from their family, partner or significant other. Not to mention that item that  keeps a roof over their head and food in their mouth which I believe is called  employment.

The days of S/M (stand and model) will be over at least for a full year. Holding a title of that magnitude automatically places you as a “bottom” to the community as it has been said. In the days before inflation, recessions and unemployment, some IML title holders went through at least $30,000 during their title year.  So make sure you take all the aforementioned into consideration before hitting the red carpet and giving the imperial wave.

Attending leather events prior to IML can put a drain on your wallet as well. Contrary to what you may have been informed, it is not mandatory for a contestant to attend or try to attend every event. For example, MAL, CLAW, and other regional leather events. You must place your priorities. I have learned that some contestants were told that they “MUST”  attend certion functions. Functions where judges, would be in attendance to observe, watch and talk to you or contact you. That is not the role of a judge  to have a contestant nervious and on edge weeks before IML.

Judges, are selected based on their background, experience and service within their communities. Large leather events should not focus on judges, nor should they be in the limelight. If guests attend including  judges, they are there to enjoy the weekend, support the cause and stay out of the spotlight.  The meet and greet gathering at the hotel should accomplish that. Judges for IML are always at the host hotel prior to the contestants and that’s the time to converse especially if you have reviewed their bios.

Meanwhile in Chicago, many may have heard of the union probems that have affected the Chicago Hyatt Hotel, which is  the host hotel for IML this year. The union which covers hotel employees have elected to stir up guests who will be staying there for IML.  Attempting to persuade people from booking rooms there.  This is a contract problem between the Hyatt, and the union. The contract between IML and the Hotel was signed months ago, and has no bearing on IML.

Union rabble rousers have gone as far as to contact IML judges via harrassing phone messages and emails, advising them not to book rooms or to cancel their reservations. Meetings are going on with all parties involved. The Hyatt is still the host hotel, and scheduled for IML May 26-30.  If you are wondering why the Union focused on Hyatt Hotel, Number one reason, Chicago is the corporate headquarters of Hyatt, and IML is a Chicago based event.  The weekend event brings millions to the coffers at City Hall.

You can be sure that Chuck Renslow and the IML Executive staff are working on this issue to ensure all will run smoothly..I was informed a fabulous weekend will happen. I do intend to have a seat at Wrigley Field and watch a game during that weekend.

THE WINDING ROAD OF DISH….

Contrary to what sponsors, advisors, and mentors may have told contestants, it is not necessary to contact judges on facebook to suddenly become their new friend.  How did IML contestants manage in the 80′s and early 90′s to meet judges before facebook and computers?  I believe there were gatherings in Chicago called meet and greet at the host hotel.

It may be hard to believe, however there is absolutely nothing wrong with wearing your leather that you have owned for a few years. Especially if you have taken good care of it and it has a special meaning to you. And for goodness sakes if you must borrow leather, make sure it was borrowed from someone who is your size and weight…Hello?

In Fagdad by the bay (San Francisco) a new Mr SF Leather was chosen. He follows Lance Holmes who did an outstanding job representing the title in 2010. The evening was not complete without the expertise of Randy Carmanty, ABW 2008, He put together a fantastic video chronicling Lance’s entire year. It can be viewed on U Tube.

The vendor market featured dozens of booth featuring leather clothing, accessories, jewelry, and adult toys. Whatever was your thing, you could find it or order it. The Centaur MC, sponsors of this yearly event gave the attendees what they were looking for, a good time.

Saturday featured bootblacks  applying their trade to the hundreds of pairs of boots. The announcement of the judges for IML 2011 in Chicago include Tyler McCormick. IML 2010, Nikitas Chondroyannos, Vancouver, BC, Massimo Fusillo, Rome, Italy, Bill Hoeppner, Ft Lauderdale, FL, Sarah Humble, Arvada, CO, Adam Latham, San Diego, CA, Trooper Long, Detroit, MI, Dan Savage, Seattle, WA. Vern Stewart, Washington, DC.

Saturday evening, gave everyone the first of the two “High Cow” events. Leather Cocktails is and always has been the grand formal leather event consisting  of  a impressive buffet display and a three hour open bar. The introduction of the 2011 contestants and judges followed.  The fashion police were out in full force. In some instances the phrase less is more is not entirely the case.

Sunday morning brunch was served prior to the contest, and the second High Cow event. Centaur Fraternal member and former MAL 93 titleholder Frank Nowicki, emceed the event. Frank, known for his prompt starting of events, did not let the audience down. The introduction of the new executive members of the Centaurs ran smoothly Judges MAL 2011 were, Matt Bamford, MAL 2010, Ron Gurney, Utica, NY, Mollena Williams, IMsL 2010, Tyler McCormick, IML 2010, R J Chapin, IML Coordinator, Ray Lamb, Frankfurt, Germany, Randy Schulman, Editor in Chief, Metro Weekly.

Seven contestants were competing for the title, Frank King, Brian Harrison, Doug Pamplin, Theo Storm, Tim White, Larry Johnson, First Sgt. The guys were put through their paces and when all was said and done, the announcement was made that Doug Pamplin, Pittsburgh, PA had been chosen MAL 2011. First runner up title went to First Sgt, from Florida and second runner up was Frank King, Rehoboth, DE.  Mr Pamplin will represent the Mid Atlantic region in Chicago Memorial Day weekend at IML.

Another nearly unheard of  shocker occurred when the amazed audience looked at their watches and discovered the time the contest ended was 3:30 PM  EST with an on time start of 1:00 PM. Truly incredible. A sound out goes to emcee Frank Nowicki. In the past the contest has run until nearly 6 PM with fewer contestants,

It is well known  when new venues are tested there are bound to be a few difficulties the first time out. However, when you are in the nations capital one would think all of the staff at a large hotel such as the Hyatt would have been well instructed as to the type of event and the type of people that would be attending. Therefore, it was totally unacceptable and discriminatory for a bartender to tell two men sitting at the bar that there would be no kissing or affection at that bar. It was more than enough to have to share the hotel with some wheat growers/farmers from Kansas. let alone hear a bartenders insulting remarks.

Especially when several months previously the District of Columbia passed a same sex marriage law. INDEED!  Fortunately, the front desk staff, did not bat an eye at anything and were extreamly courteous and helpfull.

Some guests are still figuring out what to make of the letter from the hotel which informed them they would not be permitted to be in the lobby without a shirt covering their bare body and good lord no exposed rear ends. Obviously, having been at the Washington Plaza for the past few years as the host hotel, this did not set well with many. Many ignored the edict Saturday night.

The fashion police nearly had a stroke as did many in attendance upon focusing on one MAL judge who saw fit, to appear the entire weekend in white pants and white tennis shoes!  Even Helen Keller would have known better and so should he.

Evidently, things became rather heated during the closed interview portion of the contest, One contestant did not appreciate a question asked of him, and that it was inappropriate. Maybe it was, maybe it wasn’t. but what was inappropriate, was to hear the contestant  discussing  the question with quite a few outsiders before the contest was over. tsk, tsk.

The general consensus of a large majority of  those in attendance, hope that next year, any changes in admission such as the charge for attending the vendor market be done when advertising for MAL  starts, not just weeks before. the economy is tight and so is money.

Meetings for the 2013 MAL are going to be getting underway in the not too distant future. What to do,  MLK Jr holiday falls on Jan 21st, and we know a new president is sworn in on January 20th, oh dear. But knowing that club they will handle it.

Shame on the Connecticut leather community. One would have thought at least one former title holder would have attended MAL to lend support to their current title holder.

On a positive note, every contestant who entered MAL this year were familiar with the word Kiwi, Esquire, or Shinola or knew someone who did,  Gentlemen, your boots were spectacular! In the really great guy department, A special thank you shout out goes to Carlos, of CJ Leather in Denver,  who helped to avert a fashion disaster with several contestants with a quick repair, and never charged them a dime.

As for the entertainment this fingernails scraping across a school blackboard would have  had the same effect had someone awakened the audience. At least they had clean white tennis shoes. Fire Island must love them.

It is now time to move on and find something new to bitch and moan about. June was pride month in many regions of the United States. Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago, New York, Boston, Washington, DC and Baltimore to name just a few. Sadly After 40 years of planning parades, several of the parades in major cities, still operate on “gay time” which is generally one to two plus hours after printed scheduled time.

The DC pride parade was so late until the parade ended in darkness and spectators were unable to see participants on some floats and in cars. In NYC parade participants stood in broiling, oppressive heat, and humid conditions for several hours before the parade even moved down 5th Ave. Even with glitches, hundreds of thousands lined the route and enjoyed every minute.

In NYC the week prior to the Pride parade, the hugely successful Leather Pride Night Auction raised thousands for deserving charities. Sunday followed with the extremely popular Folsom Street East fair. Over the years the attendance of leathermen and women has quadrupled, and has become one of the events to not miss during pride week celebration.

Stage entertainment was varied. Leatherman entertainer recording artist Brian Kent wooed the crowd with his latest Billboard hit release. Leather titleholders past and present made a strong showing at Folsom Street East.

On the east coast , people go to the shore, on the west coast they go to the beach. With the temperatures hovering in the high 90′s , the leather community is dashing to P Town, Asbury Park, NJ, Fire Island, the Hamptons, Rehoboth Beach, DE and Ogunquit, ME to beat the heat. Although several leather events are going on, during the warm days of summer.

American Brotherhood Weekend was  held in Chicago July 16 -18  at the LA&M. There was one contestant for leatherboy, two for leatherman and no contestants for leather woman. How sad to see a once top notch national event turn into a bumbling mess. Those who are in charge really need to get their act together if they plan on continuing this event. According to the most recent press release, ABW will schedule the 2011 weekend for Columbus Day weekend October 2011. American Leatherman 2010 title went to Louie Pacheco, of Los Angeles. American Leather boy title was presented to Bryan Teague of San Diego. American Leather woman 2009 Dakota, did agree to fill in for the title year 2010.

Finger pointing  at who was to blame  is now past. Lets hope that those who have agreed to volunteer and assist with next years event keep their word.

Mr & Ms. International Deaf Leather, July 24 – 25  In LasVegas, NV. Another contest with a lack of contestants. Terry Morrell, will retain the title for another year. Val Sherrill was selected Intl Ms Deaf Leather for 2010

Intl Leather Sir/boy  July23 – 26, San Francisco, at the Whitcomb Hotel…The only contest this summer that actually had contestants for all three titles (imagine that) International Leather Sir 2010 is Hugh Russell, International Leather boy title went to boy Ian, and Intl Commuity Bootblack  is Redwarrior.

Dore Alley Fair, July 25   San Francisco was a smashing success as always and a good time was had by all in attendance.

On the east coast preparations are under way for the Mr. Double L Leather contest September 17-19 in Rehoboth Beach, DE. In the big Apple (NYC)  the NY Eagle is preparing for their big 40th Anniversary, and the selection of Mr. Eagle NYC 2011. This will be a big blowout weekend October 1-3, 2010. Cash and prizes valued at $3,000.00.

September is a favorite month. Summer has basically ended. However there are three major events not to be missed. Two of the events fall on the same weekend. Labor Day weekend gives us Southeren Decadence. The party in the Big Easy is a nonstop 24 hour extravaganza. Bars in New Orleans have no doors, so what does that tell you? The same Labor Day weekend, the Centaur MC of Washington DC presents Olympia  XXI. An outdoor run, in the hills of Pennsylvania. Food, parties, athletic events, playrooms, swimming pools, leather store, and fun contests  and awards.  It is a weekend that should not be missed. Last but not least September brings the infamous and mysterious Hellfire Inferno run.. Sponsored by the Hellfire Club of Chicago. Imagine holding a fundraiser for legal assistance for a bar not even in your own city. Such was the case for the Atlanta Eagle when their bar was raided last year. The New York Eagle raised a hefty sum to assist them. Sent them a check and note. To this day not one word of thanks from anyone connected with that bar. Hey Atlanta Eagle was a 43 cent stamp and a thank you card not in your budget?

IN THE DON’T GIVE A DAMN ABOUT YOUR PET DEPARTMENT:  Those same uncaring people who insist on bringing their pets to parades and street fairs when temperatures are soaring. No water no shade and no concern for mans best friend. HARUMPF!!

Earthquakes, gulf oil spills, tornado’s and the war in the middle east all seemed to take a back seat to IML 2010. The annual leather event in Chicago held Memorial Day weekend sent shock waves around the leather world.

In what was noted as a first, Tyler McCormick, Mr Rio Grande Leather from New Mexico was selected as International Mr Leather 2010. That in itself  was no big deal. However, when it was learned that Mr McCormick is a transsexual (FTM), that started a storm of controversy.

His sexual identity was not of major concern per Se, as other transsexuals have competed at IML over the years. The fact that he uses a wheelchair was no big deal. Contestants in previous years have competed in wheelchairs. The major concern to many was the fact that a transsexual won!

The Internet sent the announcement around the world in minutes. The response to the news was like a clap of thunder. The questions were immediate. (1) how did this happen? (2) What are the gender requirements to enter? (3) What were the judges thinking? (4) Has IML gone in a new direction? (5) Can anyone enter now? (6) Is this the downfall of IML? (7) What does the Executive Director (Chuck Renslow) think of all of this?

All are valid questions to those who care about the future of leather and many who do not.  Once the dust settles, and calmer heads prevail, We must take a look at what prompted the selection. But the bottom line is, He was selected by the judges this year. The scores were added and he won. So all those who are unhappy with the results, will just have to get over it. All those who are thrilled with the results, see this as a new beginning, and light has finally shown at the end of the tunnel for transsexuals.

For those who are having second thoughts about inviting Mr McCormick to their contests and various leather events, for fear of a lack of attendance from their customers, Think of the disservice  and bigotry before making that decision. Remember, he only holds the title for one year, although he will always be IML 2010.  Before decisions are made, give the man a chance. Get to know him, hear what he has to say, (besides his speech at IML).

Be the truth known, there have been male (gender identified) contestants who have entered leather contests, who have had a male leather title and turned around and entered a female leather contest… AND WON!!  We wonder what those judges were thinking?

According to several 2010 IML judges, they genuinely felt he was outstanding in many categories. One judge in particular, stated “only small people would challenge whether this man deserves to be our IML, I could not be more proud to have been a part of this historic moment, where we chose the best man to represent our tribe”.

I am looking forward to meeting Tyler, and Congratulations. First runner up was Lance Holman (Mr. SF Leather) and second runner up was Jack Andrew Duke (Mr. Texas Leather)..The New Intl Bootblack title went to Tim Starkey (Mr. Boston Leather 09)

The Mid Atlantic region did quite well at IML this year. All three were in the top 10 finalist. Matt Bamford (MAL) was #5, Justin B. Smith (Mr MD Leather) was # 7 and Derrick Thomas, (Mr. DC Eagle)  placed #10…The Mid Atlantic region is so proud of you.

Another smash hit at IML was the Tribute to Mr. Marcus. On display was a large portion of the memorabilia of the life and times of  “Marcus the Merciless”. Leather history and the Imperial Court system was truly on display. Sunday night the IML Family presented a video tribute to the man we miss and love. To Jon Krongaard and all his assistants, Thank you Jon for a fitting and well received memory. I have viewed the video in it’s entirety and I must admit it brought a tear or two to my eyes. and smiles  from never to be forgotten memories.  All items that were on display will be housed at the LA&M in Chcago with the exception of the  Imperial Court Robe, worn when he was Emperior 1 AN,  in San Francisco at the  San Francisco Gay Historical Society with other court artifacts.

Pride month is here for most of the country. The nations capital, kicked off DC leather pride with a street festival. Although the weather was not the best a large group of the leather community attended. This was the first leather street festival, but I know it will not be the last.  Mr & Ms Capital Pride Leather 2009, held their stepping aside this week also. Due to “technical difficulties” there will not be a Capital Pride Leather contest for 2010. aka: drama is what it is known as. Which means there will not be a contestant (at this time and point) competing  for the MAL in January 2011.

DC DISH….

New dog in town?  Well the Witch has learned plans are in the works for a new Imperial Court system. All you lovers of drag (participant or observer) get ready. The Imperial Court of Washington, DC is here, in case you have not heard. We all know the Mother Court (as it’s called) began in SF, with Jose Sarria the Widow Norton in 1965 and there are 70 or more chapters. According to the flyer distributed this past weekend, it will be open to gay, straight, lesbian, bi, and trans. Oh lord  here come the sewing machines and glue guns.

The promoters of this endeavor are John-Richard Daniel, XXXIII former Emperor of SF and Imperial Crown Princess Blair Michaels..Gee, I wonder what the Academy of Washington, DC thinks of all this? Frank, oh Frank are you reading this?

The DC Eagle has enclosed their back deck. So now all the prissy leather queens will not have their leather soiled with bird droppings and rain…Haleluya!!

Has anyone (bar managers in general) informed some of their new twinkie bartenders that tips are not mandatory? Tipping is a reward for good service and fondness for the bartender. Have the two words, Thank you been erased from their memory as they snatch any money off the bar and into their tip jar? Understandably, when a bar is very busy they might forget. However they always remember when you do not leave a tip. Big complaint from customers is having to stand and wait at a non busy counter, until the bartender finishes his conversation with his friends at the opposite end of the bar. You might turn your head occasionally  to see if anyone is ready for a drink…HELLO?  Dupont Bars, WAKE up!

So great to see the late Wayne Nesbitt’s Mother (Novella) at the leather pride Festival. Mrs Nesbitt, was selling T Shirts with all proceeds going to one of Wayne’s charities in DC. The Duke Ellington School of Music for under privilage children.

And to all you who inquired about dress codes for Judges at IML. There is no dress code enforcement. Fashion code police who were there were unable to hand out citations to some. Lord knows, they wanted to.

The Leather community in some cities seems to be shrinking when it comes to finding good qualified contestants to enter local contests. Therefore, it is so tiresome to find  so called pillars of local leather communities bickering, arguing over such non important things such as who will or will not  attend send off parties, and this title holder does not like that title holder. This one will not speak to that one, this one will not ride on a pride float because someone said this or that.  Such is the case in DC.

One would think sometimes we are dealing with 4 or 5 year old pre schoolers, with the I am getting out of the sandbox and not playing with you anymore and taking my toys and going home game.  In this area we are lucky enough to have 3 contests to send represenatives to IML. In the past at least two of the contestants always shared the special sendoff  spotlight. Now sendoff parties are scheduled for the same night, same time at different bars. Would’nt  you think that MD, DC and VA could work together once their contestants are selected? The pettiness of it all is totally ridiculous. All those sideline agitators, need to step back and slam their lips shut. Coming together is a lot easier than tearing apart. Come on children Do you think you can play nice for a change? And you know who you are. Verbal nastiness and inuendos have no place on facebook or the title holders page.

The Centaur Motorcycle Club of Washington, DC, celebrated their Fortieth Anniversary January 15 - 17.  The big event of the weekend was the selection of Mr. Mid Atlantic Leather 2010. The Selection of Matt Bamford 27, of Alexandria, VA. brought a roar of approval from the standing room only crowd.

First runner up honors went to David Dean 46,  Mr. Pittsburgh Eagle Leather 2009. Second runner up was Jeff Jarnigan , Arlington, VA. The other contestants were Alan Peoples, James Botelho, and John Truzz. Judges Jeffrey Payne, (IML 09), Lamalani, (IMsL 09), Steven Dwyer, (Mr. Hoist Leather 09), Roger Alford, (Mr Gulf Coast Leather 05), Keith Hunt, (Intl Drummer 94), boy Ky, (Former President DC BOL) , Kip Hollar, MAL 09.

A plethora of events, vendors, cocktail parties, cigar parties and the very formal Leather Cocktails kept everyone busy the entire weekend. Although the weekend events were held at several different locations this year, shuttle buses transported all the guests with no problems. This was the last year that the Washington Plaza will be the host hotel. Next year the host hotel will be the Capital Hyatt. All events will be held there including the Vendor Mart. As a dress rehersal, Leather Cocktails was held there this year, and seemed to meet with approval from all who attended.

Entertainment was provided by KeniMattix an extraordinary acrobatic duo and by Myke Lowe a talented singer from Berlin. Myke also performed at the closing Reaction Dance Sunday evening. Onyx hosted their annual cocktail party and the room was packed.

It goes without saying, that everyone in attendance this year noticed that the late Marcus Hernandez was indeed missed. But he was there in spirit.

Mid Atlantic Weekend  is also the time that the announcement is made of the selection of the judges for International Mr. Leather in May. The judges for 2010 are: Jeffrey Payne, Dallas, TX, Laura Antoniou, Queens, NY, Shawn Carroll, Ottawa Canada, Demetri Moshoyannis, San Francisco, CA, Chad Neal, Kansas City, MO, Gene Romaine, Seattle, WA., Daniel Ruester, Berlin, Germany, William “rubberwilli” Schendel, Chicago, IL., Robert Valin, NY, NY., Bio’s of each judge can be found on the IML website.

Word is out the the San Francisco Eagle Tavern is up for sale. The Endup bar in San Francisco is also up for sale. Both south of market bars have a long and special history in the gay community. No word on new buyers. Hopefully the new owner of the Eagle will keep it the same. However should it fall into the hands of a developer of condo mania,  hopefully the leather history that adorns the walls of the Eagle will be saved. Memorabilia of bike clubs, bike christenings, bike blessings and the names of wonderful leathermen and trailblazers who have gone on before should not be thrown away.

If for no other reason, those items should be placed in the SF Lesbian and Gay Historical Society. Hopefully someone will ensure that this happens should the Eagle fade away into history.

The IML Executive Board members are preparing a most fitting and memorable tribute to the Late Marcus Hernandez leather columnist extraordinaire and Judge Emeritus of IML During IML weekend. As every contestant knew, Marcus the Merciless always made the announcement of the top 20 finalist. Therefore this year that honor will go to the person who loved and cared for him to the very end, Queen Cougar.

Imagine having a leather title from a major city and attending  a major leather event which is suppose to be a way of meeting other contestants and judges of the class of 2010. But watching a football game was more important than attending the second  largest leather contest in the US.  So he elected to remain in his hotel room. Why bother to even attend the weekend event? I’m sure his sponsor is not too amused.

What a shame the word “brief” has no meaning to some title holders when they decide to thank everyone including Jesus Christ and the 12 disciples. Knowing full well  the event is on a timed schedule and needs to end. IML has the right idea, do the step down speech the day before . Let’s face it 39 minutes is entirely too long.

For those who attended MAL and were surprised there was no jock category this year. It was not the fault of the Centaurs. The owners of the building had a no exposure of fanny clause in the contract. The contest should be back to normal next year when it premiers at the Hyatt.

For as many years as leather cocktails has been presented it has always been ”The” formal event on Saturday evening. What a shame some of those in attendance were not quite clear on the concept or did not care.  A jock strap and a dirty pair of tennis shoes worn by some  were an embarrassment.  If  those who wore those items were were making a fashion statement, they failed miserably.

The fashion police patroling  the hotel hallways did not miss the pink fringed chaps worn by a particular titleholder. Fortunately the shoes did not match.  Only a  boa, and hat  rounded out the ensemble. The titleholder from the New England area made sure everyone knew who who he was. His body was covered by the sash, and can be used as a sling once he gives up his title.

For those who were unable to pull themselves away from the host hotel, it must be duly noted that a new bar/restaurant opened in the DuPont Circle area. James McGlade, owner of the Leather Rack now has a lovely new place in the building where the Leather Rack is located on Connecticut Ave NW  called the Black Fox Lounge.

The Year 2009 came in with a big bang. A new President, a new administration and great expectations for the citizens of the United States.  Marcus Hernandez, leather columnist for the Bay Area Reporter was one of the celebrants looking forward to 2009.

Known to thousands of men and women, in his 77th year Marcus did what he did so well. He covered gay and lesbian events from coast to coast. Always bringing to his legions of readers, the latest coverage of current, past and future leather events.

For the most part, Marcus was there to cover the event first hand and the photo’s in his weekly column proved it. Chiding those who requested a mention of their upcoming event, and neglected to submit their information for his weekly column.

Generally the responsible person only let that happen once. Afterwards the plethora of the same notice, would cause Marcus to send out an email to the sender instructing them to cease and desist. One notice was enough.

There were those who took offense to some of his columns. if their names were mentioned. But rest assured, every Thursday morning when the BAR came out men and women raced to the newsstand to see if their name made the news, and immediately memorized the page number. When the name was not mentioned, and someone thought it might be them, the phone rang at the BAR office, all wanting to speak to Mr. Marcus. For those who were hellbent on making his column knowing it was something ridiculous, immoral or just plain stupid, Marcus would deal the ultimate blow by never mentioning their name or actions in print ever again. This (to many) publicity hounds was considered a fate worse than death.

Mr. Marcus had a favorite saying, “I don’t make the news, I only report it”. And report it he did. Scoundrels stealing money from gay organizations, local politico’s who talked from both sides of their mouth (as he put it). He took them all to task.

He was a firm believer in equality, fairness and gay rights and same sex marriage rights. He was not happy with the outcome of  Proposition 8 in California last year and made his feeling loud and clear. One always knew where Marcus stood on any issue weather you agreed with him or not.

There were those who were not in agreement with anything Marcus said or did. Those who accused him of only getting a story partially correct, or a misspelled name, an incorrect caption line, or incorrect date. Granted, those things did happen. But in fairness to the man, those things were not always his fault. Many were the time that if an apology was needed, one was forthcoming.

Marcus championed many charitable causes in the bay area. Over the years lending his name, sponsoring, and raising hundreds of thousand of dollars. Especially when the aids epidemic hit in the early 1980′s. The Aids Emergency Fund was just one of many.

Many times he would hear of  someone who’s illness prevented them from being able to exist, and who did not even live in the San Francisco Bay area, and would send a check. Such was the case of a young man in NYC who he had never met, did not know, who lost everything except his life in a horrible fire.

Marcus had his faults as all of us do from time to time, but he was the first to admit that. He could be (and was stubborn and hard headed) at times. Even Marcus and I had a disagreement, which resulted in our not speaking to each other for six months in the early 80′s.  I would not back down, nor would he.  However 6 months was as long as we could stay apart. There was too much dish that we had to discuss.

Known as Mr Marcus to thousands around the world, he set the standard for leather etiquette, history and information. His weekly leather column for over 38 years has kept every leather person, and those interested in the leather world abreast of information from coast to coast and around the world

Marcus passed away Thursday October 8, 2009 at age 77.  Marcus had been hospitalized for several months. The Doctors were treating him for several ailments. Being such a fighter, all of his friends had hoped he would pull through and make a strong recovery. Sadly enough there were those in the San Francisco area and supposed friends of  Mr. Marcus who put out notices announcing his imminent demise weeks before his death. Marcus responded to those soothsayers of death via telephone,” rumors of my death have greatly been exaggerated”.  He fought long and hard, and did not leave this earth until he was ready.

I had the ultimate pleasure of calling Marcus my friend for well over 42 years. A friend who would do anything for you. A friend who would let you know when he was right and you were wrong or vice versa. Very straight forward with a live and let live philosophy and yet defend the gay and lesbian community to the utmost. Yet for all his gruff exterior, Marcus was the softie, with a heart of gold, who had a difficult time saying the word No to anyone, who saved everything that anyone gave him and treasured it.

Although he was a member of the SF Imperial Court system, and held the title of Emperor 1 AN, he felt the court system and leathermen could successfully exist together. He did not agree with every policy, but he did support and defend it’s existence. He had his favorite Emperor and Empresses, and attended many coronations over the years.  His friendship with Jose Sarria was one that he treasured.

To sum it up, Remarkable, Amazing, funny,  and the likes of Marcus Hernandez will never be seen again. To say he will be missed, would be an understatement. Those who knew him should feel fortunate to have shared advice, mentoring, friendship, leather history and the love he gave to all of us.

The celebration of the life of Gilbert Marcus Hernandez will be held Saturday, November 21, 2009 at 1: 00 PM. City Nights, 715 Harrison St, San Francisco, CA.
